Can you remember why you did a PhD?

Because I wanted to see if I could go as far as I could possibly go with the qualifications in English literature with the material I'd got and the skills that I'd got. It also was quite clear in my final year of being an undergraduate that I was going to get a first class honours degree and my lecturers all seemed quite confident that I would secure AHRC funding so I was encouraged by that. I originally wanted the PhD because I wanted to go into teaching in a higher education institution.
