Transcript:

Did you have any expectations of what you would do after the PhD?

No, it was difficult to envisage my time after the PhD because I was still at university, I was still studying, I still wanted to finish what I'd done, so it was very difficult to see myself afterwards, let alone know what I was going to do. I'd always wanted to kind of like teach and I did think that university teaching, lecturing, might appeal so it was quite easy to do that side of things when I got to do the PhD, but equally I didn't quite know whether I'd want to be publishing and that kind of thing so whether (talks to child: thank you darling) whether an academic career would really suit either, so I was quite open, which was quite scary to not know where you're going, especially when people are questioning you, you know 'why are you doing the doctorate? Is it because you want to lecture or have an academic career?' and I said 'well, I'm not quite sure yet' and it seemed a bit erm unsatisfactory.
