Did you anticipate an academic career when you embarked on your PhD?

I was hoping for it. I didn't know how likely it was because I knew that it was very competitive in western universities and also again international network, my friends and contacts who were involved in full time academia were by and large not very happy at all. I remember one of my MA tutors from the Australian university writing an article which I read about how the humanities in Australian universities were really suffering. There wasn't enough funding. There were enormous pressures. It was impossible to find, to teach as he really wanted to or to find the time for research and publishing as he wanted to and so I wasn't starry eyed about it but I did think that it would be fun to try just maybe five years of lecturing in my specialist area and I thought that I would give that my best shot and see if it could happen but I would say that it probably was a hope rather than an expectation.
