Could you tell me a little about your PhD topic?

Yes. It was a post colonial study. The title was Reading as Translation Language and Power in African and Pacific Novels. It was a comparative study. I studied four novels in depth, three African and one Pacific and then in the final chapter I looked briefly at three other Pacific novels in an attempt to redress the balance. And I looked at really the politics of language and also at what happens when we read texts and how far are we able to enter into the world of the writer who probably will come from a very, very different culture from the reader and I tried to describe that act as an act of translation although the texts that I was studying were written in English and I was reading them in English and English is one of my two mother tongues still there was such a gap between the world of the reader and the world of each writer which I was using the analogy of translation as an attempt to explain that it is quite a tenuous process to try to understand the text.
