Do you ever regret leaving academia?

I'd say on the whole that I actually, I don't regret it. I have few regrets. I have certain moments of nostalgia for quiet, independent study in a lovely library. I miss the libraries now and then but I think it was the right direction for me and I don't regret at all the period of time that I spent doing my PhD.  It was incredibly rewarding. I do sometimes think that, it's really nice, I think, when you're in academia to, erm, the sort of level of expertise that you have, and I sometimes miss that. I mean, because of the nature of doing a PhD, you have to find a topic where there's something new to be discovered and inevitably you become a fairly significant authority in whatever this often quite narrow field is that you're focusing on, and I sometimes sort of think I miss being that, you know, being in an element where I know that I have very, very, very high levels of authority and expertise. The job that I'm in just now requires a much broader range of knowledge and skills.
