What was your PhD experience like?
Positive and negative I think. Yeah, I did my PhD in two years – most people take at least three – and that was not because I'm spectacularly efficient but just because I was going to run out of money if I took any longer. It did mean I probably did the bare minimum to get the degree. You know, another year of researching the topic would have made a better thesis but, you know, I still passed it without a horrible viva or sort of endless revisions or anything like that. But at the same time I wouldn't want to sort of qualified philosopher reading my thesis, I would be too embarrassed. But, yeah, I spent those two years just doing my PhD. I didn't do any of the other things that are really useful for graduates to do like trying to get articles published or attending lots of conferences and just sort of enjoying all the enriching activities that you can do as a graduate. I did some teaching but that was really it and that was out of necessity as well.
