Liz - inspiration and influences
Liz discusses what influenced her career decisions.

Did anyone or anything influence your aspirations or your decisions or the things that you did with regard to your career development?

Yes. The culture in teaching and research in the arts in the institution where I was when I did my PhD influenced me. I did some teaching in the cultural studies department where I had been an undergraduate as a mature student and the department actually closed because of a poor RAE rating and that did influence me a great deal. I looked at those very dedicated people who'd, some of them, given their lives over to teaching in higher education and I think that, it left a rather nasty taste in my mouth. I wouldn't say it made me think 'no I'm not going to do that.'   But it probably swayed me away a little. I do remember that when that happened that was the beginning of my starting to think what else can I do?  What else do I like to do?  No one person or anything else really, it was just the general culture in which I found myself that influenced me I guess.
